Strengthening Bilateral Ties: Papua New Guinea Welcomes Chinese Delegation
Today, Papua New Guinea's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Justin Tkatchenko, warmly received Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his delegation in Port Moresby for an official visit, extended at the invitation of Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and Minister Tkatchenko, aimed at fortifying the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
In their bilateral discussions held this afternoon, both sides covered a range of shared interests. Several agreements were reached, marking progress in deepening cooperation between Papua New Guinea and China.
A significant step forward was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Cooperation in the Field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which promises advancements in Papua New Guinea's ICT sector. Additionally, protocols on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Unroasted Coffee and Cocoa Beans from Papua New Guinea to China were signed, facilitating market access for local farmers and potentially boosting economic growth through job creation and increased income.
Minister Tkatchenko expressed gratitude for China's financial support of USD 270,000 (K1.02 million) towards funding the Joint Feasibility Study for a Free Trade Agreement and a donation of US$1 million (K3.8 million) for disaster relief, underscoring China's commitment to aiding Papua New Guinea in times of crisis.
Reaffirming Papua New Guinea's steadfast support for the "One China" policy, Minister Tkatchenko emphasized the importance of China's ongoing assistance in realizing Papua New Guinea's development objectives. He also recognized China's constructive role in the Pacific region, promoting cooperation and addressing shared challenges.
Minister Tkatchenko reiterated the importance of trust in nurturing a robust friendship between Papua New Guinea and China, emphasizing Papua New Guinea's acknowledgment of China as a crucial bilateral partner and its dedication to strengthening the bond between the two nations further.
